For Baby

Posted On 2009-11-07 , 11:26 AM

There is so much that I need to get done.  My daughter, Teri, is expecting her first baby in February.  I had all these plans of making all kinds of baby stuff and I have barely started.  I am starting to worry because time is really going by fast.  Before you know it, the baby will be here and probably have outgrown anything that I was try to make.

I went to JoAnn's to buy fabric for the baby.  I am going to make the Little Prince a couple of buntings with matching hats.
A bunting is  that cute little sack type sleeper that will keep them all cozy.  I was lucky because the baby knit fabric was 50% off today.  I also plan on making a couple those out of fleece.

I think what I will do today is to cut everything out and then start sewing tomorrow.  That should give me a real good head start, especially me because when I start something I want to finsh and I will stay up until I am done.  Wish Me luck.

A great Halloween night.

Halloween was so much fun.  I went trick or treating with a gypsy, genie and a power ranger.  My daughter and son-in-law dressed up as Cleopatra and Julius Ceaser and I went as a Ninja.  In my next life I hope I can be a Ninja.  I had to find a costume really fast because I had not planned on dressing up, but  the Halloween party required it..  So I looked up Ninja's to see what they wore and I had everything I needed.  A black pair of pants, long black shirt , belt and a  sword, plastic of course.

The best part was the head piece.  Surprisingly it is just a black t-shirt pulled up over my nose and the back  pulled up over my forehead and then tied it in back with the sleeves.  It look great.  I felt really cool.  I think I am going to sign up for some karate classes.

My mom's costume was the best one .  She is eighty seven years old  and I pinned a sign on her back that read "from Pasadena".  Get it!  The little old lady from Pasadena.  It was very funny.   One daughter was Amy Winehouse, tatoos  and all and then the other daughter was the Audrey Hepburn.

Halloween is everywhere

Halloween is everywhere and everyone seems to be enjoying themselves with decorating and dressing up.  My granddaughter had to dress up as super hero.  She chose wonder woman.  I made her a pair of little royal blue shorts made from the polyester satin and sewed a few gold stars on them.  She put it together with a little red tube top that we added straps to and then we made a crown and the golden cuffs  The cuffs were made out of gold lamey (is that how it's spelled).  Then we made some simple red leggings with a white cuff that looks like the red boots that wonder women wore.  Anyway she looked very cute.  I'll try and get a picture of her real soon.

From Skkirt to Bag

Posted On 2009-10-17 , 8:40 PM

I found this black skirt in a bag of clothes my daughter was getting rid of.   I like to  sort through things before I send them off because once in a while I will find something I can still make use of.   This skirt was made of a very nice black fabric and the embroidery on it was too beautiful to waste.  I really wanted to make use of this skirt somehow.

I decided to make a bag. I cut off the waist band and the hem. Used felt for the lining to give it some body. I found a very pretty piece of dark red fabric for the lining and the straps that matched the embroidered flower on the skirt. I cut the felt and the lining fabric to fit the bag and put it all together. It turned out very nice. I gave it back to my daughter for her birthday. We both got a good laugh out of it.

My motto is never waste anything. I was in such a hurry to give it to her I forgot to take a picture of the finished product.

Sewing is Fun with Kids

Posted On 2009-10-08 , 9:28 PM

Im a sewing instructor and love to teach children sewing. I find that the kids are so eager to learn and are very creative. They always do exactly what I ask them to do, but when they have an idea or if they feel they can do something differently, then they usually speak up. I love it when they do speak up because they often have a very unique idea. Mainly their ideas evolve because they want to finish the project and they devise a faster or shorter way of accomplishing their task.

There are often times when they want to omit steps altogether. I explain why each step is necessary, but I give them the freedom to do it their way as long as I know it will not totally ruin the project. To my surprise most of the time it works out just fine and everybody is happy.

The sweet girl that is pinning is my granddaughter. She doesn't like to pin. She just wants to cut, sew and finish. I asked her to just put in a couple of pins for practice. She was working on a pillow and was so eager to finish. She finished in record time and it turned out pretty good.

As for myself, I always take the long way around because I try to get as perfect as possible. That is the fun part for me.
