The Peter Pan collar has been around for a very long time and has managed to keep up with the fashion trends.

To make a Peter Pan collar use the trick that a professional dress maker used to avoid a collar with curling edges.  With these easy instructions you will learn to roll and shape the collar before it is sewn to the dress.

How to make a Peter Pan Collar

Use a non-woven interfacing and cut using the collar pattern.  Trim away seam allowance on the outside edges of the interfacing, but not seam allowance at the neckline.  Non-woveninterfacing fabrics are crease resistant and if sewn
into the seam  cannot be pressed to give a sharp edge around the collar.

Place the non-woven interfacing against the wrong side of the under collarand stitch it
in place.  Stitch very close to theedge of the interfacing.

To make collar roll correctly

To make the collar roll correctly, the upper collar should be slightly larger than the under collar. The commercial pattern usually makes this allowance on suits and coats. The amount of difference in size between upper and under collar depends on the weight of the fabric.

With an average weight fabric if you bring the upper collar in 1/8 inch from
the edge of the under collar that should be enough ease for the collar to roll correctly.

Assembling Collar

Pin the collars together easing the upper collar slightly all around.  Sew the collars together. When you trim the seam allowance, graduate the seam widths, trim the under collar seam allowance to about ¼ inch and the upper collar seam allowanceto about 3/8. This makes the edge of the collar more flat.

Notch the seam every ¼ inch all around the curve of the collar then turn the collar to the right side. Press around the collar bringing the seam line slightly to the underside so it is not visible along the outside edge from the top.  It might help if you baste along the outside edge before pressing. When using a woven interfacing, it is not necessary to cut away the seam allowance before it is sewn to the under collar.

APPLYING THE COLLAR

Mark the center back of the collar and neckline with a clip.  Begin pinning the collar at the center front and place all around the neck. Match the neckline notches and the center back marks.   It is easier to pin and sew only the collarto the neckline first. The facings can be pinned and sewn after.  The correct roll of the Peter Pan collar is now set. Sew from the center of the collarto the front, first on one side then the other. Then pin and stitch the facings
to the neckline.

If the Peter Pan collar is used on a top without a front opening the collar sections should be the same length and should meet in the center. Bring front edges of the collar together.  Stitch about an inch on either side of the front edges on the seam line, this holds the front edges in place as the collar is sewn.

All shaped collars can be made in this same general manner.  Only the application changes depending on the style.   Using this method  will result in the perfect Peter Pan collar.
