The beginning of the Singer Sewing Machine is amazingly different from what we believe it to be. Issac Singer did not invent the Singer Sewing Machine.
He was born in 1811 to poor German immigrants in Pittstown, New York.He was an actor but, in 1839 he invented a mechanical excavator. He was able to sell it for $2000 which he used to fund his theater group. The theater group called the Merritt Players lasted five years.
The Singer sewing machine is the most well known. The Singer sewing machine began with Isaac Singer an actor by choice. It was the difficult situations in his life that linked him to sewing machines.
After his theatrical touring he went to work at a wood printing shop. He worked on improving the wood printing machine and in 1850 took it Orson C. Phelps in Boston who woned a sewing machine shop. The wood printing machine was not selling. Singer then became interested in the sewing machine. Phelps indicated that people were returning the sewing machines. Phelps asked Singer if he would work on improving the Lerow & Blodgetts Sewing Machine.
Singer’s idea to improve the sewing machine was to make the shuttle go back and forth instead of in a circle and that the needle should be a straight needle that went up and down instead of a curved needle. The sewing machine was patented and marketed as the Singer Sewing Machine. Singer did not invent the sewing machine he did, however, make very significant improvements
Many legal battles were fought over patent infringement, however mass production began. 13,000 Singer sewing machines were manufactured in 1860 on Mott St. in New York. Through Singer’s financial success of the Singer Sewing Machine he was able to build a mansion on Fifth Avenue in New York. Singer continued his work on sewing machines. He died at age 63 of heart disease, July 23, 1875.
