These are the essential sewing tools that are required to have in your initial sewing notions kit. These are the principle tools necessary for sewing success.  Description and explanation of sewing tool usage are provided.

Begin a sewing notions kit with a caddy of some kind.   Sewing baskets
are very pretty and can be very efficient if you don't have a lot of stuff. Then there is a wooden sewing box, which can hold a little more because  it tends to have more storage compartments. Once you have accumulated a fair amount of sewing notions a tool box  or tackle box is the best way to go.

                         TOOL BOX
Tool boxes are a great asset to your sewing notions kit.  They come in many
sizes, styles and colors with a lot of room to hold everything in an organized manner.   The tool box will have a tray which will conveniently store scissors, rulers, markers, seam rippers and all the other small things that can easily  get lost at the bottom of the box.

On top of the lid are convenient compartments encased by a see through secure lid.  The compartments are small spaces perfect for bobbins threads making them easily accessible.  The tool  boxes are not as pretty as the sewing baskets and wooden boxes, but will hold a lot more tools and will help you keep all the sewing notions organized. A tool box is always ready for travel for those very important sewing classes.

                                                                                        TACKLE BOX

Tackle boxes are much bigger and have a lot more room with three or
four drawers full of  compartments in various length and sizes for all sewing notions.  The upper compartments can hold large scissors, rotary cutters, pin cushions,  magnetic pin holders and much more.

The compartments in the 4 drawers can be adjusted so that pens and rulers fit perfectly.  There is enough room to include many spools of thread, bobbins, extra needles, safety pins, buttons or anything else.  Both the tool box and the tackle box are very sturdy and affordable. Both these boxes are excellent for travel.

The following are sewing notions that are a must  for your
sewing notions kit:

SCISSORS   Rubber grip spring scissors.

SEAM RIPPER   A small hand held tool with a pointed tip, small curved blade and tiny rubber ball that helps prevent ripping the fabric. Used to open buttonholes and seams.

THREAD CLIPPER   Smaller spring type  scissor used to cut thread

NEEDLES   Sharps are for all purpose, Ballpoint needles are for knits

and Milliner needles are used for long basting or gather stitches

PINS   Silk pins are used for light to medium weight fabrics, Straight pins are used for general sewing

and Ballpoint pins are used for knits.

PIN CUSHION  Any small stuffed pillow which will allow safe storage of pins.  The most common is the red tomato with a small attached berry.  This     attachment is used to clean and sharpen needles and pins by inserting them back and forth a few times.

TRACING WHEEL  This is a hand held plastic tool with either a serrated or smooth edged wheel at the end used to trace symbols from the pattern to the fabric. The serrated edge wheel makes a dotted line and is suitable for most fabrics.  The smooth edge wheel will make a solid line and is better for delicate fabrics

TRACING PAPER  Tracing paper is waxed carbon paper which comes in a variety of colors and is used with the tracing wheel to transfer the symbols from the pattern to the fabric.  Use an opposite color than your fabric in order to be able to see the markings more clearly.

TAPE MEASURE  Use a vinyl measuring tape as the cloth tape tends to stretch out.  Select a reversible 60" tape.

SEAM GAUGE   A small ruler with a sliding marker that helps provide accurate measuring for alll projects.

Point turner   Used for poking out the points on corners.

Folding cutting board  Can be used on the floor or on the table and will protect your table from scratches.

Weights   Used to hold pattern down while cutting.

Magnetic pin holder
This fun sewing notion will catch your steel pins (Should not be placed near a computerized machine.)

Magnetic Seam Guide
This is a magnetic rectangular piece, placed on  the sewing machine plate to guide the fabric and sew a perfectly straight line. (Should not be placed on a computerized
machine)

With these sewing notions you will be ready for any sewing project.  Needless to say there will always be new and fun tools to add to your tool kit.
