Simple serger sewing is done by a machine that trims and stitches at the same time.  Learn how serger sewing can be fast, fun and extremely creative.

Simple serger sewing fast and easy.   Once you use a serger, you will never be without one and you will wonder why you didn't buy one sooner.  A serger is a machine that trims and stitches the seam allowance as it wraps the cut edge preventing raveling.  This type of machine makes a beautiful, neat and professional looking seam.

These machines are featured because of their popular excellence and are highly recommended by many serger users because they are easy to use and thread. All include an instructional manual and a how-to DVD. A very important feature which these machines have is a differential feed which provides the grip necessary to sew through different textures and thicknesses of fabric without slipping, sliding and getting jammed.

The price is amazing for what these machines have to offer. You can’t go wrong owning one of these sergers. The only difficulty you will have, is choosing one.

A serger sewing machine uses loopers rather then a bobbin allowing for the use of heavier threads, yarns and ribbon for many decorative options.  The best part of using this type of machine is that it is so simple to sew with.  You put two pieces of fabric together place under the foot and sew.  You don't have to lift the foot, just press on the peddle and go. The seam is sewn and trimmed and ready for pressing.

Faster Sewing

In combination with the sewing machine the serger sewing machine will provide for a much faster construction of a garment and definitely a more professional looking project.   The conventional sewing machine is still needed for the straight stitch, zig zag, button hole, top stitch, etc.  The serger sewing machine usage is classified by the number of threads it uses.

The 2 and 3-thread machines are the most common and are used for edging and seaming, mostly on knits and woven fabrics.  The four-thread serger creates a stronger and more flexible stitch.  The 5-thread serger creates a very strong stitch used for apparel manufacturing.  The serger sewing machine eliminates puckering on silky and light weight fabrics.

Serged finished edge

The seam with a serged finished edge gives an unlined garment a professionally finished look.
Flatlock stitch
A flatlock stitch used with a decorative thread will be stunning on any project.

Rolled edges
The edges of ruffles and hems rolled with the serger sewing machine gives a fine narrow finished look.  (This is a big time saver)
Ribbing and knits
Ribbing and sweater knits can be serged, eliminating raveling.
Two way stretch fabrics
Use the serger sewing machine on two-way stretch fabrics for beautiful and professional looking swim suits or active wear.
Stripes or prints
Stripes or prints can be aligned and passed through the serger sewing machine easily, resulting in a perfectly aligned piece.
Decorative thread
Any thread whether it be contrasting or matching can be decorative enough to be used on the outside.  Works great on jackets, vests, purses & bags, wallets, and anything else that can be turned inside out.

Differential feed
Some sergers have a special feature called the differential feed.  Sewing machines with differential feed have two rows of metal teeth (feed dogs) that grip the fabric and pull it through the machine.  The front feed dog pushes the fabric and the back feed dog leads the fabric out the back.  Differential feed is not available on all sergers, but once you use it, you''ll love it.  This is what prevents the puckering on silky and fine fabrics.  It is also used for gathering light weight fabrics and prevents knits from stretching.

Before shopping for a serger sewing machine, decide what the primary function of the machine will be.  Will it be to sew seams, to make crafts, garments, window treatments or all around serging.  There is a specialty to each serger.

Remember, the more the machine has to offer the more you will have to learn and understand.  So buy a machine that is not intimidating.  Take a serging class before buying a serger sewing machine. Then test drive several machines using the types of fabrics that will most likely be used in your projects.

A serger sewing machine will give you completely different options for sewing besides the ones that the conventional sewing machine has to offer.  It will provide you with simply the best sewing experience and results.  If you just want it for straight seams, there is nothing better or faster

You can also do fancy, beautiful and very creative things with this machine.  You will have to take classes, but sergers allow you so much creativity.  It's a whole new world of fun. It's up to you, wild, creative serger sewing or very simple serger sewing.
You decide.
